Day 56: Bled, Slovenia - No Mr. Bond, I Want You to Die!

Bled, Slovenia

Most famous for having a cameo in Casino Royale, Bled is a small village in northern Slovenia at the foot of the Alps. Some genius a long time ago decided that it wasn't enough for people just to go to church, but that they had to row themselves there if they wanted to attend, which of course they did. Thus, he picked a small little island in the middle of Lake Bled and plopped a church onto it. Beautiful, yes. Efficient, no. Nevertheless, it made for a good trip.

Unfortunately it was raining, so I didn't get a good view of the Alps behind Lake Bled, However, the mist did add a nice effect to the area. More efficiently, the rain gave me an excuse to sit down and try a kremna rezina, a cream cake made in the Bled area that Urban gushed about for about half an hour the previous night. His eyes even glazed over while he was talking about them and I think he forgot I was in the room. It was delicious, however, so I can't blame him. I even had another one before returning.

The island and church.

I circumabulated the lake, admiring the misty views at all points. The lake is also home to a few swan families, which adds to the effect. I then hiked up to a viewpoint to admire the vista. Another good thing about rain is that it drives people away. I had the entire viewpoint to myself, so I took advantage of that by unpacking my lunch and eating undisturbed while watching the lake below.

More lake.

At the end of the day, I hiked to a gorge in the Alps, near Bled. After Plitvice, it just couldn't compare, but was certainly pretty in its own right. Along the way the sun started to come out just a little bit and I was able to sneak a peak at the Alps.

A little village right next to the Alps.

The gorge.

More of the gorge.
